Neuberger LJ condemns court budgetary cuts

Sir David Neuberger has expressed concern that the government’s intended 10% reduction in the court budget will result in “unacceptable” cuts at the “sharp end”.

Speaking at the annual Property Litigation Association conference at Keble College, Oxford, on Friday, Sir David said that he feared that cuts in government expenditure would inevitably affect civil litigation. “It is wrong, in principle, to cut back on court delivery”, he stated, adding that the reduction was unlikely to affect the administrative function of the courts.

He warned that although judges are working to prevent this and are seeking to ensure that disputes are dealt with fairly and quickly, there is a real danger that the public will ultimately become disaffected with the court system.
