The Independent’s weekly property supplement, reports how Newcastle and Gateshead appear willing to take architectural risks.
It cites the example of Sir Norman Foster’s Sage Gateshead, the Baltic arts centre, the St James’ Park stadium stands and the Malmaison hotel sitting on the Quayside.
That same bravery is now being shown in private property, it says. An attempt to modernise Newcastle’s huge volume of low-cost homes and its legacy of council housing is being made in Byker, where councillors and residents are about to choose which of five private architects’ plans will be chosen to transform the suburb.
