Banco Santandar is looking at possibly buying the Clydesdale and Yorkshire banks from National Australia bank.
It will build a war chest form the sale of Abbey National’s life business to Resolution.
Rumours on Friday suggested the Spanish bank was considering a bid for Alliance & Leicester.
