English Partnerships (EP) has given the go-ahead for the reclamation of Europe’s most contaminated site, the 242-acre former Avenue Coking Works in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
VSD Avenue will start work on the five-year project in April 2007, and will be backed by government funding of £104.5m.
Site owner East Midlands Regeneration Agency (EMDA) wants to see a mix of residential and commercial development start in 2011.
The “innovative” remediation strategy has been approved by the Environment Agency and will be the largest application of these new technologies in Europe.
Jeff Moore, chief executive of EMDA, said: “The former coalfields of North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire have been severely affected by colliery closures and the contaminated land left behind.
“One of our main tasks is to support the regeneration of these areas through major projects such as this.”
