The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and English Partnerships’ application for the first phase of the regeneration of East Cowes town centre and waterfront has been approved.
Isle of Wight council has granted outline planning consent for a mixed use development which forms part of the 32-acre East Cowes Project .
The first two phases of the scheme are likely to include a new town square, supermarket, and 150-200 homes.
Sites earmarked for redevelopment as part of the overall regeneration programme include the former GKN North Works, the Sylvan Avenue housing site, Venture Quays, Trinity Wharf, the existing Red Funnel marshalling yards and the Well Road car park, and will feature:
· 550 new houses.
· 37,000 sq ft of retail including bars and restaurants.
· A 21,000 sq ft foodstore.
· Community and maritime heritage facilities.
SEEDA’s development projects director, Peter Cusdin, said: “Securing consent enables the regeneration plans to proceed and unlocks new investment.
“This is a really exciting opportunity and we will be working closely with partners, local residents and businesses to create a vibrant waterfront town.”
