The number of homes worth more than the inheritance tax threshold has risen by 72% in five years according to Halifax, reflecting the sharp rise in house prices.
Britain’s largest lender called on the government to link the tax threshold to house prices as it reported that 30,451 estates were liable to pay tax with a further 22% rise to 37,000 expected by 2006-07.
