The Centre of Future Studies has predicted in a report published yesterday that motorways will be less congested by 2050 because computer-controlled cars will drive more efficiently than people.
It said intelligent cars would drive at high speed in tightly packed lanes. This would be just one part of a radically revamped transport network.
The report came on the day news broke of a trial to use the hard shoulder on a stretch of the M42 outside Birmingham which could be rolled out to other motorways.
