Heath House, in Tean, Staffordshire, is for sale, for £4m though Knight Frank.
The Times says its sale is a tragedy that English Heritage and the local councils should now work tirelessly to avoid.
The Thomas Johnson-designed Grade II*-listed mansion comes with stables, cottage, coach house, saw mill, early Dutch barn and 127 acres.
