Property tycoon David Kirch is celebrating his 70th birthday by giving everyone on the island of Jersey where he lives aged 70 or over £100 for Christmas.
One in 10 of Jersey’s 88,000 population is over 70, meaning Kirch’s payout to pensioners will total around £1m.
Kirch said: “I reached 70, which was not an entirely welcome prospect, but decided against hosting a lavish party. Instead I wanted to share the occasion with all other Jersey residents who will have reached this milestone.
“I guessed there would approximately 3,000 of us, and was surprised to find that there are three times that number.
