The House of Commons culture media and sport committee says money diverted from museums and galleries to help pay for the 2012 Olympic Games in London could be repaid to the heritage sector by selling land after the sporting extravaganza.
Its report, Caring for Our Collections, expresses “deep concern” about raiding funds and says they should be treated as a loan and repaid.
No more money should be diverted from the Heritage Lottery Fund or other lottery distributors if the Olympic bill exceeds the figure set out in March, it says.
The MPs criticised the lack of progress in encouraging philanthropy.
