Langtree submits plans for St Helens scheme

Developer Langtree Group has today submitted plans that will unlock a series of developments in St Helens, Merseyside.

St Helens

The plans submitted by Langtree are for a new 18,000-seat stadium for St Helens Rugby League Club and a new Tesco Extra store on the derelict 46-acre United Glass site.

In turn, Tesco’s existing outlet on Chalon Way will be redeveloped for retail uses.

St Helen’s current stadium at Knowlsey Road will be replaced by a residential scheme developed by Taylor Woodrow.

John Downes, managing director of Langtree, said: “The planning application is the product of a lot of hard work over the last few years by everyone involved and the result will be a fantastic new development on the former United Glass site with the new Saints stadium as its centerpiece.”

Brian Spencer, leader of St. Helens Council, added: “The proposed development will bring a range of benefits, not just to our own borough but to the region in general, bringing massive investment and jobs.”

If approved by planners, St Helens, who are the reigning Super League and World Club Challenge champions, will start the 2010 season in their new ground.
