Tesco heads for Harrogate

Tesco is planning a supermarket in the only postcode on Britain’s mainland that does not have one of its outlets.

It plans to open in the spa town of Harrogate, Yorkshire, on the site of a former gas works which it bought for £3.5m three years ago.

Tesco has battled a campaign by residents and independent shop owners.

However, the borough council has identified the need for a supermarket on the north side of town.
