Tesco wins Brixham regeneration

A public consultation will kick-off next week into multi-million pound plans for the redevelopment of Brixham town centre, in South Devon.

Torbay Council’s regeneration arm, the Torbay Development Agency, has selected Tesco to design and build the scheme.

Tesco is still working-up the detailed final proposals but they could include a 27,000 sq ft foodstore, 350 car parking spaces, 40 homes, 10 other retail units and some office space.

Work on the site is due to start next year and detailed proposals are due to go on show to the public in early November.

The town centre scheme is the second of three major regeneration projects to transform Brixham.

The first of these, the development of Oxen Cove with a new fish market, is already underway.

In the longer term on the waterfront, the new Northern Arm breakwater and marinas will transform the outer harbour area.

Tesco’s South West Corporate Affairs Manager, Melanie Chiswell, said, “Most people know Tesco as a supermarket but we also have our own team of specialist developers to work on schemes like this one where the content is far more than just a foodstore.”

Brixham is already a key fish landing port for Tesco, one of three in the UK.
