Waterloo Square design competition launched

Architecture and design experts from across the country were today called upon to create a new square in London’s Waterloo.

Following the publication of the mayor of London’s Waterloo opportunity area planning framework last month, an Official Journal of the European Union design contest notice for the creation of Waterloo Square, SE1, was released today.

The South Bank Employers’ Group issued the notice in connection with a two-stage project competition to find a design team to create the square at the BFI IMAX Waterloo Road roundabout.

Managed by the Waterloo City Square Implementation Group, the project aims to develop concept ideas for the improvement of the public environment, accessibility and connections to transport interchanges, and enhance walking routes in the area.

It is anticipated that public consultation on the future of the site will commence in 2008.
