Green light for £1bn Cambridge biomedical campus

Countryside Properties, Liberty Property Trust and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have won consent for Europe’s largest biomedical research campus in Cambridge.

The £1bn scheme will comprise a 2.3m sq ft biomedical research and development centre expansion of Addenbrooke’s Hospital as well as a learning centre, conference and hotel facilities and shops.

Countryside has separately lodged plans for residential scheme at Clay Farm, which alongside other projects in the area will create 3,000 to 3,500 homes.

“The Cambridge Biomedical Campus” will be built on 70 acres next to Addenbrooke’s Hospital and will incorporate existing facilities.

It will include a 270,000 sq ft Laboratory of Molecular Biology, designed by RMJM Architects for the Medical Research Council, and a home for Papworth Hospital which is relocating.

The first research and development buildings on the campus will be completed in 2010.

The landowners were advised by Bidwells. Savills acted for Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
