Retail developers vie for Rome site

International retail developers are among bidders for a retail and leisure site in Rome. Up to six companies have been shortlisted to develop the Mercati Generali site, which is within a mile of the Coliseum.

The shortlist includes US reit The Mills Corporation, working with Italian company Fratini; French private company Altarea; French developer S,g,c,; and Italy-based Realty Partners. UK-based Retail Resorts International, run by John Milligan, was shortlisted but has since pulled out.

The site can accommodate up to 83,000m2, but commercial development is expected to be restricted to around 28,000m2. The winning bidder would have to work with historic buildings and provide a library and other community facilities. Jones Lang LaSalle is acting for Altarea; Cushman & Wakefield Healey & Baker for Mills.

Meanwhile, DB Real Estate has paid an undisclosed price for the Valmontone factory outlet in Rome’s Fashion District, for its Grundbesitz-invest fund.
