Frankfurt’s Zeil is one of the most successful retail locations in Germany, and is always one of the top ranking in terms of visitor numbers.
However, it still has the bad image of being one of the ugliest retail areas in the country. For years there have been complaints about its lack of flair and the bad flow of pedestrian traffic.
At the start of April, architect Chritoph Mäckler suggested opening it to traffic again. Competition to the Zeil is now in place courtesy of four shopping centres on the edges of the city.
