Council unveils new plans for Hornsey depot

Haringey council has announced new plans for a depot site off Hornsey High Street, N8, after splitting with preferred developer Inner Circle.

The developer was selected in August from a shortlist of seven to develop a 29,000 sq ft food store and 287 homes on the 5.2-acre site, which includes the 3.3-acre former Hornsey Central Depot and Hornsey mortuary and coroner’s court.

However, a statement from the council said negotiations with Inner Circle were terminated last month, “after a revised offer for the site from the developer”.

Under the new proposals, Sainsbury’s, which already owns part of the site, would take forward the new supermarket and housing which make up the first phase.

The remainder of the site will be marketed by the council with planning permission for private and affordable housing as the market improves.

“We’ve worked hard with Sainsbury’s to move this scheme forward since the negotiations with the previous developer were terminated last month,” said Cllr Charles Adje, Haringey cabinet member for resources.

“This is an important regeneration site for the borough, and we are determined that local people will see the benefits.

“We now have a way forward, taking account of current difficult market conditions, that will keep up the momentum and provide the most attractive deal for prospective purchasers.”

A spokesman for Sainsbury’s, Richard Haynes, added: ‘”Sainsburys is delighted to continue working with the council. The scheme will bring forward much needed regeneration for Hornsey High Street and an exciting new store for our customers.”
