Hammerson hit as council bids to save Light Bar building

Hammerson’s 51-storey Bishop’s Place tower has been dealt another blow after Hackney Council officials recommended that a conservation boundary be extended to incorporate the Light Bar.

In a letter obtained by EG, Ray Rogers, urban design & conservation manager at Hackney council, wrote that the out of court agreement between Hammerson and Light Bar occupier James Goff had allowed Hackney council to conclude its review of the conservation area without the threat of demolition of the building beforehand.

He wrote: “In recognition of the strong support from English Heritage for the inclusion of 233 Shoreditch High Street within the conservation area, it is proposed to recommend this amendment to Cabinet on the basis of the building’s townscape value.”
