Bluewater reports rise in footfall despite recession

Bluewater shopping centre in Kent is defying the credit crunch with footfall for January 2% ahead of last year.

Footfall at Bluewater during Christmas was up by 4% compared with 2007 and more than six million shoppers visited during November and December.

Bluewater said 27.5m shoppers came through its doors in 2008, an increase of 5.5% compared with 2007.

Andrew Parkinson, general manager, Bluewater, said: “We have a fantastic offer, including 330 shops, restaurants and bars, 13,000 free parking spaces and great accessibility, combined with lakes, parkland and a wide variety of entertainment and leisure activities.

“Our total offer creates a unique experience that we believe will maintain Bluewater’s appeal during what is undoubtedly going to be a challenging time for many households.

“Our offer continues to evolve, Hollister for example has just opened a flagship store, and we also have our tenth anniversary to look forward to.  It is going to be an exciting year ahead.”
