Tate Modern wins permission for toned down extension

Tate Modern director Sir Nicholas Serota has won over Southwark Council with a toned down planning application for the gallery’s extension.

The council committee granted the Tate an extended five years to finance the Herzog & de Meuron £215m project in light of the financial climate.

Completion is planned for 2012 although this could extend into 2013 if the gallery makes full use of the financing extension.
