Python nets Tesco for Middlesbrough Cooperative

North East-based developer Python Properties has secured Tesco for its Cooperative building in Middlesbrough city centre.

Tesco Express has taken a 6,000 sq ft ground-floor store on a 15-year lease. It will pay a rent of £47,000 pa.

The store is expected to open in the late autumn.

The Cooperative building comprises 30,000 sq ft of office space and was named the best commercial building at the Middlesbrough Council design Awards 2009.

Martin Johnson at Python Properties said: “The Cooperative building provides an ideal home for a new Tesco Express and the company has been a pleasure to work with.

“The decision-making process has been extremely efficient and I look forward to welcoming the Tesco Express store as it opens later this year.”

Councillor David Budd, executive member for regeneration and economic development at Middlesbrough council, said: “The refurbishment of the Cooperative building has seen the property completely transformed back to its original Art Deco style.

“This has been wonderful news for Middlesbrough – by improving the property’s appearance the restoration project has encouraged a major retailer to open a further store within our community, which will also help to create a number of new jobs for Middlesbrough.”

Davison Blackett Limited advised Tesco.
