Ask Developments, Tesco and Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) have submitted detailed plans for the redevelopment of Old Trafford cricket ground in
The plans, which form part of a proposed 50-acre sports-led regeneration of the Old Trafford area, include a 100,000 sq ft foodstore for Tesco.
Proposals also include a £32m redevelopment of the cricket stadium, designed by architect BDP, intended to modernise the stadium and boost prospects of it being selected as a venue for the Ashes test series in 2013.
Old Trafford missed out on 2009’s Ashes series, with
Plans include two new grandstands which will ensure capacity of 15,000, capable of rising to 25,000 with temporary seating, plus new player and media facilities, refurbishment of the pavilion and an extension to the club’s
Works will begin by autumn 2010 with completion in late 2012.
A first phase of redevelopment is already underway; the £15m The Point conference and events suite is under construction for completion in July 2010.
Old Trafford has been the home of LCCC since its formation in 1864, but was previously the home ground of Manchester Cricket Club from 1856.
LCCC chief executive Jim Cumbes said: “The club makes a huge contribution to the local and regional economy and is a critical part of the region’s international sporting infrastructure.
“It’s a time of fierce competition for the rights to stage international test matches, which saw the ground lose the Ashes this year.
“The significant investment in the new facilities will ensure that Old Trafford regains its rightful place on the international test match circuit in time for the 2013 Ashes Test.”
