Cost overruns threat to Edinburgh tram project

The Edinburgh tram project linking the airport west of the city to Leith on its eastern waterfront is at risk from cost overruns which are threatening further delays.

Only a small fraction of the on-street track has so far been installed.

The scheme, which has become a big embarrassment for the Scottish capital, looks unlikely to open in 2012 as planned. Speculation is rife that the BSC consortium, responsible for construction, will seek tens of millions of pounds of extra payments from Edinburgh Trams which is constrained by a £512m budget.
