20 April 2010: A boat or a seagull? These are the two predictable favourites to become Plymouth’s new logo after brand consultancy Lloyd Northover was handed the task of creating a new public image for the city.
The company, which has already rebranded Belfast (a big “B” in the shape of a heart) and Dubai’s financial district (an abstract diamond) is expected to come up with something funky for Plymouth.
Local folk remain deeply sceptical. Vigorous debate on one local newspaper’s website suggested that a track-suited chav might be a more suitable city symbol than the inevitable ship or breaking wave.
Slogans suggested by Plymptonians included: “Plymouth – helping police with their enquiries”, and: “Plymouth – it’s not big and it’s not clever.”
