Figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government have indicated that three out of four new homes were built on gardens in some parts of the country last year – almost three times the national average.
The highest rates were recorded in the Chilterns, South Buckinghamshire and Sevenoaks.
The coalition government said in June gardens would no longer be classified as brownfield for planning purposes in a bid to prevent unwanted development where residents objected and to protect the character of their neighbourhoods.
