Manchester-based planner DPP Shape has received approval for its masterplan for Colwyn Bay town centre in Conwy, North Wales.
The plans for the seaside town include a revamped shopping centre, town square and park, and a new bridge which links the town centre to the promenade over the North Wales Expressway which separates the two.
A detailed housing neighbourhood plan will also be taken forward, and the first phase of projects, including coastal defence works, will begin in January 2011.
Conwy council, under The Bay Life Regeneration programme which extends to 2025 and is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, appointed DPP Shape to lead a team in Colwyn Bay.
Goronwy Edwards, Conway council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “The council has been impressed with the way in which DPP Shape has worked with its officers and been able to bring a variety of ideas together to create an ambitions, yet achievable vision for Colwyn Bay which has gained widespread support both within and outside the council.”
Shelagh McNerney, managing director at DPP Shape, said: “Shape’s town-wide plan for Colwyn Bay will hopefully provide this beautiful coastal town, set within a stunning environment but currently underperforming for its residents, its businesses and its visitors, with a new lease of life.”
