von Essen buys Welsh country house hotel

Luxury hotel group von Essen Hotels has bought Llangoed Hall Hotel in the Wye Valley, Wales, from the late Sir Bernard Ashley’s estate.

The four-star country house hotel, which is set in around 15 acres of formal gardens and parkland, is comprised of 23 bedrooms, a drawing room, an award-winning restaurant and the Whistler private dining room. The hotel also has a self-contained banqueting suite and orangery, with several rooms licensed for civil marriage ceremonies.

The hotel’s grounds also feature a helicopter pad, a purpose-built helicopter hangar and two garages.

von Essen Hotels owns and operates 30 luxury hotels in the UK and France.

Andrew Davis, chairman of von Essen hotels, said: “I am delighted to have acquired a property with such an individual  history and in such a unique location. The purchase of Llangoed is testament to my ongoing personal commitment to this company and our strategy for continued growth.”

Simon Stevens, director at Christie + Co, which advised Ashley’s estate, said: “This trophy property deal was confidentially negotiated off market with von Essen Hotels, which will seamlessly incorporate the business into its exclusive collection of country house hotels. There were a number of other operators who expressed a keen interest in acquiring this outstanding opportunity, proving that would-be buyers continue to act quickly if a realistically priced and well-located hotel becomes available.”
