New Macclesfield Town stadium gets green light

Wilson Bowden has been given the green light for a major regeneration scheme in Macclesfield, including a new football stadium.

Cheshire East Council approved the stadium for the town’s League Two side as part of a wider regeneration scheme after 10 months of consultations with locals and business owners.

Consultants, led by CB Richard Ellis, identified how the council and other partner agencies could unlock the “excellent economic potential” of Macclesfield.

The new stadium will be built on the South Macclesfield Development Area between Congleton Road and London Road.

It is thought that both that area and the town centre will be regenerated by the scheme, which will include retail development, leisure, housing and a new link road and improved rail links.

Council leader Wesley Fitzgerald said: “This is a good example of try, try and try again. We have made mistakes but there is agreement now about how we are going about it. It’s good for Macclesfield – at last the vision is beginning to look like a reality.”
