Ian Simpson Architects and de Rijke Marsh Morgan have been appointed as architects for phase one of the redevelopment of the Battersea Power Station.

In an announcement today, Treasury Holdings said the two firms were appointed after a competition between a number of architects during which they spent time on site interpreting Rafael Viñoly’s masterplan. Rafael Viñoly will remain as architect in chief for the site and will continue to oversee the detailed delivery of the project.

Phase one will comprise more than 1m sq ft of new buildings from the approved 8m sq ft masterplan. Located on two blocks to the west of the power station, the space will have a mix of uses, including homes, offices and studios, restaurants and shops.

The larger block fronting the power station will be designed by Ian Simpson Architects; dRMM will be responsible for a residential block adjacent to the western boundary. Construction is due to start on the structure in summer 2012.

Rob Tincknell, managing director of Treasury Holdings, said: “It has always been important for us to create architectural diversity and an interesting aesthetic for this site, which is the largest redevelopment in Central London.

“It was our ambition to stage the competition in a different way, in order to draw out the skill and innovation of the architects, with the intention of lifting the bar in terms of design.

“The designs put forward captured both the drama and architectural significance of the site, while complementing Rafael Viñoly’s overall vision.

“We are delighted to have both Ian Simpson Architects and dRMM on board the project and we are excited to work with them and Rafael Viñoly to bring forth the initial phase of this exciting redevelopment project.”
