Pure Gym secures fourth Scotland outlet

Pure Gym, the low cost gym operator, is to open at Edinburgh’s Ocean Terminal shopping centre as it continues to make inroads into the fitness club markets.

Pure Gym has taken a 15-year lease on 15,800 sq ft from landlord Forth Ports. The Ocean Terminal is Pure Gym’s fourth in Scotland, following openings in Edinburgh’s Quartermile, Bath Street in Glasgow and the imminent opening of a gym on Aberdeen’s City Wharf.

A recent report on the low-cost gym sector by Oxygen Consulting suggests the UK could have up to 275 low-cost clubs by the end of 2011, representing around 8% of all UK private clubs.

Established in 2009, Pure Gym now has 14 clubs across the UK and is aiming to double in size over the next 12 months.

Angela Crawshaw, property director for Pure Gym, said: “We are delighted to add another Scottish property to complement Edinburgh Quartermile, Glasgow and soon to be Aberdeen. We continue to look for suitable properties in the major towns and cities in Scotland, and will have 25 pure gyms throughout the UK by the end of 2011.”

Simon Bashford, senior surveyor at Jones Lang LaSalle, said: “Pure Gym is exercising first mover advantage within the low cost leisure sector in Scotland and the UK. This latest deal is further proof of the company’s ambitious expansion plans within Scotland. It’s also a great acquisition for Ocean Terminal, further diversifying the centre’s tenant mix, and providing customers and nearby residents with additional leisure and fitness services.”
