Newham bets on Aspers for Westfield casino

Newham council has chosen Aspers to operate a casino at Westfield Stratford City in east London.

The decision, announced today, follows a battle to build the UK’s first “large” casino close to the site of the London Olympics.

The 65,000 sq ft casino will be located in the Central Arcade at the new Westfield Stratford City in Newham. It will have internal and external access as part of the round-the-clock leisure and entertainment offer at Westfield.

Michael Gutman, managing director for Westfield in the UK, said: “The Aspers Casino will be the icing on the cake for our leisure and entertainment offer at Westfield Stratford City.

“We believe the entertainment and retail offer we have created will prove to be a real game-changer for consumers on the Eastern side of the capital.”

The new casino is a major part of the leisure and entertainment offer at Westfield Stratford City, which includes a 14-screen Vue cinema, a 14-lane bowling alley and a total of 617 hotel rooms across three hotels, including a four-star flagship Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites and a Premier Inn.

The Central Arcade, located at the heart of the scheme and close to the entrance to the new Aspers casino, will be home to restaurants such as Giraffe, Las Iguanas, GBK and Wagamama. An outdoor plaza will also offer alfresco dining with views overlooking the Olympic Stadium.

Westfield Stratford City opens in September.
