Maze prison regeneration kick-started

Plans to redevelop the former Maze prison have been bolstered with the appointment of Turley Associates to develop a spatial framework.

The design consultancy’s Belfast office will be working with Colliers International, which has been appointed to develop the related delivery and implementation plan for the 347-acre Maze Long Kesh site near Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

The site, which dates back to the second world war, became notorious during The Troubles for housing political prisoners, a use that ceased in 2000. Since then, numerous plans have been put forward without success.

It is now owned in its entirety by the Office for the First Minister and deputy First Minister. Regeneration is being taken forward by a programme delivery unit pending the establishment of a new MLK Development Corporation later in the year.

The spatial framework will be prepared over the summer and autumn, working closely with a number of stakeholders.
