Edge Hill University has applied to extend its Ormskirk campus as part of a development that includes a £30m sports complex.
The Lancashire university intends to open an eight-court indoor sports hall and a 25m swimming pool, surrounded by an athletics track, as well as part floodlit natural and synthetic playing fields. The sports complex is expected to cost £30m.
In addition, there will be improvements to the campus infrastructure and car parking facilities.
The application follows a two-year consultation and has been submitted to West Lancashire borough council by consultancy Turley Associates.
A council decision is expected by autumn. Construction is likely to begin in 2012 and is due to be completed by 2013.
