Tesco wins planning in Alton

Tesco Alton

Tesco has secured planning permission for a store in Alton, Hampshire.

Tesco’s plans comprise a 38,750 sq ft store on Mill Lane. Other improvements include cyclist and pedestrian links and traffic calming measures.

The store will open in late 2012.

The decision comes at the end of a two-year process that saw four planning applications and two appeals. Prior to Tesco’s appeal being heard, Waitrose was given planning permission for a store within Alton. However, during Tesco’s appeal, the inspector determined that the Waitrose store would be too small to satisfy the council’s requirement to keep shoppers in the town and subsequently granted Tesco approval on appeal.
