Asda plans to develop a 633,500 sq ft distribution facility at Wilson Bowden’s Kingsway business park in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
The supermarket chain has struck a deal with Wilson Bowden which will see it develop the unit by the end of 2012. It will serve its North West supermarket network, which increased in size last year following Asda’s takeover of Netto.
Asda will submit a planning application later this month to develop a 44-acre site on the 420-acre Kingsway.
It will include almost 500,000 sq ft of chilled warehousing, including some office space, along with a 133,500 sq ft on-site waste recycling centre.
Ant Everett, head of network development for Asda Distribution, said: “Since the successful acquisition by Asda of the Netto business in 2010, the company has identified a shortfall in capacity in the North West and Yorkshire in its specialist warehouse provision.”
