JD Sports’ final bill for property damage and stolen goods caused by the UK riots is likely to top £10m.
Peter Cowgill, executive chairman of the sportswear firm, said around 30 of his stores had been damaged during four days of riots, which began in Tottenham, north London, on 6 August.
He estimates it will cost JD Sports in excess of £10m. The company has also lost revenue by closing stores following police warnings of more potential trouble.
The British Property Federation said it is concerned that unlike JD Sports, smaller independent retailers, operating from smaller buildings, may not be able to recover from costly repair bills and lost trade.
