Met reveals 350 buildings damaged in London riots

 


Riots in London caused criminal damage to 350 properties, according to figures released by the Metropolitan police.


The Met today said it had recorded 3,296 notifiable offences during disturbances between 6-9 August, across 22 of the capital’s 32 boroughs. Of these, 280 were criminal damage to commercial property, and 70 were criminal damage to residential buildings.


In addition, there were 1,101 cases of burglary in non-residential properties, and 48 incidents of burglary in residential buildings.


Arson accounted for 162 of the offences, gutting properties such as the Carpetright store on Tottenham High Road, and furniture retailer House of Reeves in Croydon.


Met commander Simon Foy, said: “We estimate that we have around 20,000 hours of CCTV footage to view. Forensic and crime scene examiners have been working on more than 1,100 crime scenes and more than 300 forensic submissions have already been made to labs.”


To date, 1,838 have been arrested in connection with the disorder in London.
