Liverpool John Moores University has bought a 260,000 sq ft former sorting office from Royal Mail in central Liverpool for £2.6m.

The university plans to transform the Copperas Hill site into a new teaching facility as part of a 10-year plan to reconfigure its city campus. The refurbished facility will open in 2014.

The building sits on a 3.6-acre site close to Liverpool Lime Street railway station. It served as a sorting office from 1977 to 2010.

Royal Mail announced in November 2008 that it would depart Liverpool in favour of a move to a 179,000 sq ft consolidated sorting office in Winwick Quay, Warrington.

DTZ acted for Royal Mail; CB Richard Ellis acted for Royal Mail.
