Rioters ‘should not be pushed into private housing sector’

Convicted rioters evicted from council houses could push more anti-social problems into the private property sector.

The National Landlords Association said it is concerned that councils are under increasing government pressure to evict convicted rioters from their properties.

David Salusbury, NLA chairman, said: “There is currently no system in place for private landlords to perform background checks on tenants exiting social housing, leaving them ill-equipped to manage their tenancies effectively. Local authorities cannot deal with the problem of anti-social behaviour by expecting private landlords to blindly absorb convicted tenants.”

The warning come shortly after Southwark council wrote to 35 tenants warning that if they, or members of their household, are found guilty of offences related to the recent London riots, they could be forced to leave the council-owned properties.
