Nine out of 10 riot-hit locations in London, were within a five minute walk of a large post-war housing estate, new research has revealed.
During the London riots in August, 84% of incidents in north London, including Tottenham and Wood Green, took place in local centres 400m from large post-war housing estates.
In south London, including Croydon, the figure was 96%, according to consultancy Space Syntax which analysed 12 town centres across the capital.
The study was conducted to test Space Syntax founder Bill Hillier’s theory that the complex spatial layout of modern housing estates has a negative effect on social patterns.
In addition, almost 75% of convicted rioters in London live in the large estates, said Space Syntax.
The company said it will extend the study to include regional cities affected by the riots.
