Grosvenor gets nod for Burton makeover

Grosvenor has been given the go-ahead to extend its Coopers Square shopping centre in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

Coopers Square has the potential to be increased in size by 110,000 sq ft, comprising an additional 11 double-height shops and a 55,000 sq ft anchor store.

There are 70 shops totalling 385,000 sq ft in the centre at present.

Grosvenor project director Simon Armstrong said: “Grosvenor has been exploring the opportunities to extend Coopers Square and improve the surface car park with East Staffordshire borough council for some time. We are pleased that the committee has resolved to grant planning permission. This is a significant first step towards bringing new investment and jobs to the area.”

Councillor Richard Grosvenor, leader of the council, added: “Despite competition from nearby cities, Burton continues to attract shoppers and visitors and this new development, created by an organisation that has demonstrated success in other towns and cities, will be another string to our bow.”

Coopers Square was bought by the Grosvenor Shopping Centre Fund in 1999. The fund and the shopping centre are managed by Grosvenor Fund Management.
