Barnet proposes new tenancy arrangements

Barnet council has set out proposals for new tenancy agreements using powers from the government’s Localism Bill.

The north London council has released a draft tenancy strategy for consultation.

Existing council tenants will continue to have a guaranteed lifetime tenancy, however new residents will be offered a five-year tenancy which will be reviewed at the end of the period to see whether the tenant still needs a subsidised home.

New single tenants under the age of 25 will have their tenancies reviewed every two years.

A £32,580 salary is the council’s benchmark for when a tenant is financially able to move on from council housing.

The strategy reflects new powers the government is giving councils through the Localism Bill, which will be implemented in April 2012.

Tom Davey, Barnet’s cabinet member for housing, said: “This will help us tackle the issue of under-occupation in future, by enabling us to move people on from properties that are too big for them.”
