Derwent London prides itself on its creative approach to design, its client base and its financial resilience. The business was well positioned when the downturn began and was able to continue funding developments without recourse to a rights issue.
Our judges believed the group has emerged from the recession in a strong position with an exciting pipeline of projects.
Derwent is the largest real estate investment trust focused on central London commercial property. Its core strategy is to acquire and own a portfolio of income-producing properties with opportunities to enhance and extract value through refurbishment, regeneration and redevelopment. At 31 December 2010, its portfolio comprised 5.4m sq ft of space worth £2.4bn.
Its headline achievement in the year was the completion of the 263,000 sq ft Angel Building, EC1, Derwent’s largest redevelopment to date.
In 2011, it won a RIBA London Award and the BCO London and South East Refurbished/Recycled Workplace Award.
One judge said: “It is an exceptionally good business. I am impressed by their mentality.”
