Scotswood regeneration gets nod

New Tyne West Development Company, a joint venture partnership between Newcastle council and developers Barratt, Keepmoat and Yuill, has been granted detailed planning permission for the first phase of its housing-led redevelopment at Scotswood in Newcastle.

The decision paves the way for construction to begin on the first 378 of 1,800 homes on cleared land on the banks of the Tyne.

The homes will be two, two-and-a-half and three-storey properties comprising 78 with two bedrooms, 206 with three, 44 with four, and 50 apartments.

Construction of the first homes is expected to be under way by the early summer, with residents moving in before the end of the year.

Over the next 15 years, the partnership will invest £265m in the 163-acres of land. It will create 1,800 sustainable homes – up to 25% of which will be affordable homes for rent and shared ownership – new community and commercial facilities, together with parks and public open spaces. The affordable homes will be owned and managed by Tees Valley Housing – part of the Fabrick Group.

Newcastle council Scotswood ward councillor Hazel Stephenson said: “The provision of quality housing for families within a well connected, safe, accessible and healthy local environment represents a welcome step in the regeneration of Benwell, Scotswood and the wider area. Together with the well designed public and green spaces, this will create a positive sense of place. Finally, as well as new homes, it will bring investment and jobs.”
