Judicial Review threat to London Bridge revamp

Campaign group Bermondsey Village Action Group today said it would consider launching a judicial review challenge against the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, SE1, if final plans are approved.

The group was at City Hall today trying to convince London mayor Boris Johnson to block the scheme.

Network Rail submitted plans to redevelop the south London station last year. Proposals for the site include a new ground-level concourse bigger than the pitch at Wembley stadium.

The rail company has also applied for listed building consent for the demolition of the train shed roof above the terminus platforms and conservation area consent for the demolition of the South Eastern Railway building on Tooley Street.

The BVAG, which has a petition signed by more than 5,000 people, is objecting to both these proposals.

Johnson was due to recommed or reject the plans today, but told protestors at lunchtime that he had not yet reached a decision.

Campaign leader, Russell Gray, said: “It is clear from feedback to the BVAG that there is negligible public support for the destruction of London Bridge’s Victorian railway heritage, and overwhelming support for integration of the heritage buildings under threat into a reworked scheme.”

He added that Sir Terence Conran had also appealed to the mayor directly to consider alternative designs.

In May, Network Rail held a public exhibition of its plans on the station concourse, which it says more than 2,500 people visited with 93% supporting the proposals.

Subject to consent, work on the project is scheduled to get under way in 2013, with completion in 2018.
