An “aggressive” crackdown on the super-rich who use stamp-duty avoidance measures will be announced in Wednesday’s Budget.
George Osborne, chancellor, said on the BBC’s The Andrew Marr Show avoiding stamp duty by placing properties in offshore companies was “completely unacceptable”. He said he would come down on it “like a ton of bricks”. Osborne is expected to announce a general anti-avoidance rule in 2013 after a consultation over the summer to curb the most abusive and contrived schemes.
