Harrow Estates is preparing to press ahead with plans to turn the former Clariant chemical factory in Leeds into a 400-home scheme.
The Cheshire-based developer is moving forward with the scheme following approval from the planning inspector and secretary of state.
Jennie Daly, managing director of Harrow Estates, said: “What we are planning for the site will remove a local eyesore, provide much-needed additional housing and ensure that the local infrastructure is enhanced, through improvements to roads, public transport and the sports ground.
“The Clariant site has been closed for a number of years and this decision means that at long last it can be redeveloped, with investment going back into the area and the site becoming a thriving part of the local community again.”
The proposals were rejected by Leeds city council last year on highway and sustainability grounds. However, the inspector agreed with Harrow Estates that the proposals were an appropriate and sustainable use for previously developed land that was no longer needed for employment and had no effect on highway movement or safety.
The inspector also stressed that redevelopment would deliver significant benefits to the character and appearance of the locality, public transport and local infrastructure.
