Private developer Hortons’ Estate and partner Trebor Developments have won detailed consent for the £40m transformation of Birmingham’s Grand Hotel.
Birmingham council planners unanimously backed the proposals at a cabinet meeting today.
The duo plan a comprehensive makeover of the 1890s-built hotel located on the city’s prime office pitch of Colmore Row.
Plans include restoration of the building’s Colmore Row and Church Street facade, a standalone bar and restaurant at the corner of Church Street and Barwick Street, refurbished shops on Colmore Row and office space on Barwick Street.
The Grosvenor Suite ballroom will be fully refurbished and a terrace will be created in the central courtyard, giving access to nine meeting rooms and the Grosvenor Suite. A hotel bar and restaurant, accessed from Colmore Row, will also be provided. The hotel entrance will be moved to Church Street.
Detailed talks are taking place with potential hotel operators, thought to be Hilton Group’s DoubleTree brand and French hotel group Accor. A deal with an operator is due to be signed shortly.
Work will start on site in the autumn.
