Leeds council is in talks to buy a police station on land close to Hammerson’s proposed £600m Eastgate Quarters shopping scheme in a bid to provide a multistorey car park for the development.
A report which will be presented to the council’s executive next week recommends the purchase of the 66,000 sq ft Millgarth police station from the West Yorkshire Police Authority, which plans to vacate the building for a new HQ close to Leeds United FC’s Elland Road stadium.
It is understood that Hammerson would not contribute to the purchase of the building, although it is yet to be determined whether the council or the developer would be responsible for delivering the proposed car park.
Hammerson was granted planning consent for the 1m sq ft retail-led development last July. It will be anchored by John Lewis and Marks & Spencer.
